Annual Trip to the Pumpkin Patch

The Youth Group will be making their annual visit to the Pumpkin Patch after Liturgy this Sunday October 25. The cost for entrance is covered by the Church, but kids should bring money to buy their own pumpkin and any snacks they wish.

Snowshoeing

Here again are the details for the upcoming snowshoe trip,

Feb 17th Saturday,

meet at St. Herman's at 8am, and/or at Quissy's house in Mission at 9am,

BRING: a big healthy lunch, $20 for snowshoes/guide, snowclothes-snowboots. NOT RUNNING SHOES. boots may be available at the mountain.

You Can pick up your youth at The Quissy's house in Mission at 6 or at St. Herman's at Vespers at 7.

AND, you must RSVP by this sunday.

Christmas Party!

So, I think we have called everyone, but just in case you need details,

we are meeting at the church at around 3:00 to have a christmas party, the main event being decorating the tree and putting under the tree the gifts that you are all bringing for children who don't get gifts because they come from poor families.

Jesus teaches us over and over again that we must take care of the poor, so this is just the tiniest step towards learning how to give our lives back to God and give a little bit of our time and money to those that Jesus spent his time with when he was here.

we will also be baking cookies and playing a few games, and then eating dinner together at church before vespers. So, tell your parents to pick you up after vespers at about 8:30, or tell them to come vespers.

Hi Everyone!

Listen, due to the power outage and its aftermath, we are moving the youth movie night to MY HOUSE, in langley, its just off Glover and Eastleigh in langley.

Call me, (David) my number is in the directory, for directions. Basically, you take the freeway to langley, take the 220th street exit, drive south until you cross HWY #10, then turn left onto logan, which is right after the train tracks. its the first street after HWY#10. follow that until Glover Road, turn left on Glover Road,and then turn Right onto Eastleigh Crescent. I live in the apartment buildings labelled 20669, and my apartment is the one after four and before six. I am being cryptic in case some internet address harvester wants to send me lots of junk mail. anyways. come on over, bring the youts, sorry for the late change in plans, but its necessary. my TV is a bit ghetto, but it will do. ok.

Movie Night

well, we have a movie night coming up, yes thats right folks, the YOUTH are going to hang out and deconstruct our culture and its poor attempts at subversive education.

meet us at church at 6:45 on friday November 17th, and bring your intellectual idol smashing hammers, join us for a rousing discussion regarding the unspoken assumptions about whatever movie we happen to pick, (suggestions are welcome, though we have a short list and may or may not listen to them, they are still welcome)

Sorry about the mixup folks.

So anyhow, in honour of our 1 year anniversary as a youth group, we will be returning to the very site of our first ever youth group outing. On Sunday, Oct 22nd we will be heading out to the Alder Acres pumpkin patch to see the animals (hug the lammas) fight with the hay, and pick out a pumpkin for the upcoming hallowe'en craziness.

We'll be leaving from the church after liturgy at approx. 12:45-1:00 and arriving back at the church around 3:30 or so, possibly 4.

To bring:
A change of clothes, including sensible shoes
Between $5 and $10, for your pumpkin and any treats you might want to buy

Deanery Meeting-Sweeeeeet!

Sorry to be a blog-hog, but I've just confirmed we'll be having a very cool book presentation at the upcoming deanery meeting!

That meeting for clergy and laity of the BC deanery parishes is scheduled thus:

Holy Resurrection Church Vancouver
Saturday October 28th
10 am to 3 pm

Guest Speaker: Fr. Michael Gillis, Nativity Antiochian Parish

Besides Fr. Michael's talk, lunch, and deanery business, we will also have a reading from the new Conciliar Press book Keeper of the Light: The Life of Macrina the Elder by the author, All Saints Victoria member Bev Cooke. Fr. Michael's wife Bonnie Gillis, the illustrator of the book, will also be present to take part and answer questions about her work.

This book appeals to youth and adults alike, and so will the reading/q&a session, though I can't say for sure how youth-friendly the rest of the day-long gathering will be. Books will be available for sale and can be signed by the author and illustrator.

The a-MAIZ-ing Maze

So, here's the scoop.

On Sunday the 24th of September (ONE WEEK from this sunday, folks) we will be packing up after lunch hour, around 12:30-ish to head out to the corn maze in Surrey/Cloverdale. There are all manner of nifty attractions to keep us busy there until we head out back to the church, where you parents can collect your youth at 4:00. Click the link below to check out the events and information, or call me or Dave if you have other questions.
We still need one or two more volunteer drivers, so if you're available, please give us a call as well.

What to bring:
Sensible footwear
A sweater/jacket
If you are a girl (or boy) and wearing a skirt to church, you may want to bring a change of clothes that you don't mind running around in and getting dirty.
Sense of adventure. (if you don't have one, Dave will be happy to share his abundance with you.)

No, I didn't spell it wrong. 'mais' (or'maize' if you're american) is french for corn. (umm, right?)

Anyway, we're planning on going for a run through the corn maze for our September outing, after church on Sunday Sept. 24th. We'll be hanging around briefly to eat lunch as food won't be included in the outing this time around, and then we'll set off for the maze at around 1:oo-ish. Parents will be able to collect their youth back at the church around 4pm. If anyone has any questions, please feel free to call me or Dave with them. Also, we'll need 2 or so other drivers, so if anyone would like to volunteer, please contact us. Thanks!

Meteor Shower!

Its time to finally get clean! all the summer dirt will be rinsed off in this event, we are showering in meteors.

not really, but we are going to go to Aldergrove Lake on August 12, meeting at 730 in the evening to take in this celestial event.

The cost will be two dollars per person, which includes something, we're not entirely sure what, but rest assured it will be worth it. There will be large telescopes there to look at the sky with, which will be cool. some games, some food, we will have more details to come. We will provide a snack of some kind, but MAKE SURE to eat dinner before you come.

Bring a blanket to lie down on, and one to cover yourself with when it gets dark and cold.

It will be finished around eleven pm, so plan to pick your youth up after that at the designated drop off spot, whether it is St. Herman's, or a Freeway exit, or whatever we arrange in the coming weeks.

That's our basic plan for July.

Welcome back from camp, kids!! It was a blast, and oh the memories we built.
Maria, Dave and I decided that, after the Lindeman hike, followed by our crazy camp, it might be nice for you all if we did something a bit lower-key.
So, on Monday July 17th (one week from today) we're going to be splitting up the boys and girls and have seperate sleepovers. The boys will be heading over to Dave's for a night of junkfood and video games and general manly fun. The girls will be coming over to Maria's, where we'll engage in all sorts of girly silliness, from movies to nailpolish, and, of course, chocolate. We'll finish off with breakfast the next day. I'm sure Dave will be happy to serve a manly bacon breakfast to you boys, and Maria and I have some yummy ideas as well.

Boys can be dropped off at the church at 7pm, from which point Dave will take them back to his place there in Langley.
For our girls, there are two drop-off points, to better accomodate you parents who have both boys and girls in our youth group.
#1 is at 7pm, at the church, along with the boys. The other, for those of you to whom Surrey is more accessible, is at Maria's house at 7:30. You can call Maria or myself for details on where that is and how to get there. The timing is designed to allow you all to eat dinner with your families before coming and consuming copious amounts of junkfood.

We're going to need you all to RSVP, so that we know which kids are coming, and where they're being dropped off. Call Maria, Dave or myself for RSVP, or any questions you have.

This saturday's hike was a resounding success! In my mind anyways. I thoroughly enjoyed it, so did the kids despite a little water in the sky and on the trail. a few even went swimming. brave ones, those. I was pushed in by the kind hands of Sid, thanks buddy!

it was great. a little road trip, a little fire, kind of like diet camping.

Here we come!

Okay. So.

Everyone needs to bring their own food. I thought I posted yesterday, but blogger seems to have eaten it.

each young person should bring a backpack with

at least 1.5 litres of water,
a large healthy sandwich,
granola bars or trail mix,
fruit that doesn't need much doctoring

anything else is optional, and we are going to bring some other snacks.

other essentials:

sunscreen spf 35-ish
hat
sturdy shoes

if you forget your sense of adventure, one will be loaned to you at the trailhead.

Well, it would seem that the enemy has decided he doesn't like us, and so far has managed to thwart every attempt at planning our next get together. A gazillion and one problems are cropping up all over the place in coordinating our next outing, including (but not limited to) considerations of youth leaders' schedules, Group of Twelve, the Apostles fast and when exactly school gets out. (Can one of the parents please confirm for me when that is?)

So, just to let you know, we are working on coordinating an event for the youth, don't worry, we haven't disappeared. Please, please pray for us as an entity, and for Maria, Dave and myself as the leaders.

Hey! at the end of june, we are going to go for a short hike in chilliwack and then find a place to have a BBQ (hint hint nudge nudge Jordan's...) to celebrate the end of school and the beginning of summer.

we have a date and a location for the hike, but I want to start spreading the word.

okay.

So, here are a few questions to help us figure out some direction for the next year or so, see what is what.

we generally have events once a month on suday afternoons, which works well because everyone is already together on sundays, and our youth group is so far flung and young that they need to be driven around.

perhaps this works for now and then in a few years when driving is not such a problem we will have more frequent meetings?

When I was young, I went every week on the bus from south vancouver to burnaby, so that will become an option at some point for some, but last I checked a city bus from chilliwack takes two days to get to langley. by the time the Jordan's came on a bus for friday night, it would be sunday liturgy.

So, the first question then is do the parents prefer sunday afternoons? and how do the youth like it?

The other reason it works well is that the youth leaders are all available on sunday afternoons, as we are all in church anyways. friday nights don't always work depending on work schedules.

okay. ready? go. this is a question for anyone, parents, youth, observers etc.
